Crown copyright ©. Copyright material on the Department of Conservation website is protected by copyright owned by the Department of Conservation on behalf of the Crown.
Unless indicated otherwise for specific items or collections of content (either below or within specific items or collections), this copyright material is licensed for reuse under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence. In essence, you are free to copy, distribute and adapt the material, as long as you attribute the work to the Department of Conservation and abide by the other licence terms.
This licence does not apply to any logos, emblems and trade marks on the website or to the website's design elements. Those specific items may not be re-used without express permission. In particular, neither the Department of Conservation emblem nor the New Zealand Government logo may be used in any way which infringes any provision of the Flags, Emblems, and Names Protection Act 1981 or would infringe such provision if the relevant use occurred within New Zealand.
Attribution to the Department of Conservation should be in written form and not by reproduction of the Department of Conservation emblem or New Zealand Government logo.
Third party material
The licence to reproduce Crown copyright protected material does not extend to any material on this site that is identified as being the copyright of a third party. You must get authorisation to reproduce such material from the copyright holders concerned.
The Department of Conservation will not provide high resolution copies of images used on the site for print use.
Images you can use:
All images labelled "DOC" fall under Crown copyright, meaning you can reuse them under the reuse conditions above.
Images you can't use - anything labelled with:
- "Creative Commons" (check the individual Creative Commons license for usage terms)
- the copyright symbol "©" next to a photographer's name (the photographer owns the copyright, so DOC does not have permission to share the image with you).
How to find the license or copyright details:
- in the 'About this photo' text, when you click the camera icon of a hero image (large image at top)
- in the caption text on the page the image is on
- in the hover text of the image (when you move your mouse over the image)
- in the alt text of the image.
Note: If there is no hover text, right-click on the image and choose to 'Inspect element'. Any alt and title text can be read in the code here.
